The academy will cover a range of aviation topics, from flight operations to in-flight services and cargo. This behind-the-scenes look into the industry gives kids the opportunity to broaden their horizons and prepare for their upcoming college careers.
“The pilot session is one of the highlights because most students just want to be pilots,” says Julie Jarratt, Cathay communications manager, Americas. “But as you progress though the course, kids start to realize that there are other interesting options like cabin crew, sales, marketing — it exposes them to the different roles.”

Malhar Pense completed the program last year and is now a freshman in college. He credits “I Can Fly” with solidifying his choice to pursue a career in aviation. “’I Can Fly’ reinforced my decision to major in aeronautical engineering,” said Pense. “I got an insider’s look at the airline industry and it made everything so much more interesting.”
“I Can Fly” runs weekly from Oct. 2 to Dec. 2 and operates after school in downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport. Interested high school juniors and seniors may submit applications online from now until Sept. 19, 2014.
The aviation program originally started in Hong Kong in 2003, before launching in San Francisco in 2009. Bringing the program to Chicago is just another way that Cathay Pacific is catering to customers. “We started flying here in 2011, so we thought it would be nice to bring ‘I Can Fly’ to Chicago,” said Jarratt. “For us, giving back to the communities that we operate in is important.”
